That movie's terrible; I'm putting it straight to video. He liked the authenticity in it and he'd heard about Tracers also. How else could you get a hold of this? In Enter the Ninja, I didn't use my real name. And that's how I ended up co-writing Rambo III with him. This was significant not only because he wrote the screenplay for Bloodsport, but also because Dux had said some unflattering things about the writer. A little bit. And I had read an article, in this magazine called M, about the French Foreign Legion. We just became friends almost immediately. Jean-Claude?Frank Dux: When we started? I mean, he couldn't do a throw. This was all very, very low budget. And then they had me give up my net points on the film.Blake Harris: Really?Frank Dux: Yeah, for Jean-Claude to have his career, I gave up my net points. I said, "Real Kumite fighters, we fight here. This thingwhatever it was calledit was really cool and it would be a cool way to meet chicks.Blake Harris: And how did you go from passively enjoying these things to actual participating and learning how to fight?Frank Dux: I guess one of the things that helped push me in that direction was that I befriended a kid named Grant who had it far worse than myself. Over the show's decade-long run, they've covered a lot of. But it was interesting because he's fighting Mike Stone and Mike Stone had reportedly 91 wins. And like I said, guys like Sheldon didn't help, putting a knife in my back.Blake Harris: So what was it like seeing him at the screening?Frank Dux: I was cordial. And at one of these construction sites, there was a guy doing martial arts. A lot of those shots came from the camera angles I had been directing. Do you see what I'm saying? That was really my very first entry into the Writer's Guild.Blake Harris: Moving up the ranksSheldon Lettich: Yeah, and around this time I wrote a Vietnam screenplay that got me my first agent. I had my then-fianc back in the United States get all the uniforms for them. I always try to look for the best in people. You spent almost four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, is that correct?Sheldon Lettich: Yeah, I served as a radio operator in South Vietnam and then later with 1st Force Reconnaissance Company based at Camp Pendleton, California.Blake Harris: So how did you go about making that enormous transition from wartime soldier to Hollywood writer?Sheldon Lettich: Well, surprisingly enough, my first success came in the theater. He tells one where he says he met Menahem Golan [a producer on Bloodsport] at a restaurant and [Van Damme] threw out his legs and blah blah blah. "But I will say this," Lettich continued. They were supposed to present the supposed evidence that said things didn't exist. How blindsided were you when the piece came out?Frank Dux: Well, there was nothing I could do. The 20 episodes of How Did This Get Made listed below offer a taste of the world that the hosts have built. Sadly not at all. He actually challenged me to a fight. So I watched that happen and then I watched Victor Moore fight Chuck Norris.Blake Harris: Moore fought Bruce Lee and then Chuck Norris? The concept of gladiatorial games has its roots in the Etruscans, the predecessors of the Romans. And there'd be a bunch of people there with phones to record it, so we don't want this to happen.Blake Harris: Speaking of that screening, Frank had mentioned that you were crushed. And interestingly enough, it was only after Jean-Claude did that to Sheldon that he testified on my behalf in the case for The Quest.Blake Harris: I understand. Nowadays it's all kind of clich. Give me a shot with him." Brought his wife with him and we just hit it off, right from the getgo. It sold well at the box office, grossing $65 million on a budget of $1.5-2.3 million. I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. He said, "To be the best, you've gotta fight the best, kid." And he turns to me and he says: "You know, Frankie, I signed a five-picture deal. And not only did More beat Lee, but he actually let him score one. But what's crazy is almost everything he says in that interview is an outright lie or a distortion.Blake Harris: I've interviewed a lot of people in my timeincluding a lot of people I believe were trying to sell me on liesbut I never got the sense from Frank that he was trying to put one over on me. Enjoy, and please share and subscribe! And they did. They didn't know what to do, but they thought they'd give me a call. That picture with my hands crossed, you can see Bloodsport in the background. What was he like?Frank Dux: He was wonderful. Give me your best shot. Then all of the sudden I got hit in the face with a Black Dragon shirt, and that's how I became the youngest Black Dragon in the history of the Black Dragons.Blake Harris: That's unbelievable. It was horrible. And then he did a kick that missed his face by like two inches. "Blake Harris: That's great. We did not use CGI, that was only just starting to become popular, so we had to do everything optically. No, never. I'm not talking our toes are over the edge. I told Menahem that the new cut of Bloodsport was great and I thought it was going to do really well. So he re-cut the fights, Michael restructured the movie and when we saw the next cut (which was quite a while later), the movie really worked. You're craaaaaaazy." I gotta tell you: Seeing it years later, I didn't realize how good it was. That it would be helpful and therapeutic.Blake Harris: And was it? Jean-Claude's character comes to the US to help out his brother, not with anything like revenge or violence on his mind. "Well, can I show you what I've learned since you taught me?" Menahem still thought it was a piece of s***.Blake Harris: How come?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I think this might answer your question. And so he told Menahem, "Sell it to me and I'll release it theatrically." Stallone's original idea was that [Colonel Sam] Trautman comes to Rambo and says something like: hey, I got a mission for you in Afghanistan. This is like 1979 and he wanted to put together some kind of theatrical piece about Vietnam veterans. Because this is what happened next Sheldon Lettich: So they sent me to Paris and Corsica to do research and I re-wrote The Corsican Brothers, which I was going to direct. We encountered a few phonies, but eventually we put together a core group. I blame the success of Jurassic Park for this movie. He did everything to basically poison the well with Jean-Claude and everybody I worked with. And if somebody tells me they were in Vietnam, and in the Marine Corps, I'll believe them. And the CIA and everyone is obligated to tell you? Especially when it comes to the military. "Blake Harris: So what eventually changed Menahem's mind? So there would be one shot where you would see both brothers in the same shot, kind of talking to one another and then all the other shots were either close-ups or over-the-shoulders done with a double. I actually got to take my mother for the first time to see the film. And I had to find a way for him to kind of come back in and get his mind out of it. For me, martial arts is just a release. That's the thing. So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula." I wasn't a bitter person. It was definitely a therapeutic experience for everyone involved with the play. So he was just trying to get me in trouble.Blake Harris: What, in your opinion, was his motive?Frank Dux: Well, the thing is, the article came out on the same day that a few of my business competitors are holding a seminar. There had been a few other plays dealing with the military and Vietnam at the time, but they weren't written by those who had actually been there. Bloodsport hospitalizing Superman was lifted directly from his first comic book appearance. Everywhere else in my life I'm like a duck out of water, but put me in that arena and I just swim. I kid you not.Blake Harris: So you weren't some kind of jiujutsu prodigy?Frank Dux: Not at all. In the end, his psyche was broken when Jimmy Olsen brought his brother onto the scene.
